if vs. whether

If means “in the event that” or “on the condition that”: If the preliminary results hold up over time, the research will be a success.

Whether means an indirect question involving alternatives: The investigator asked whether the results were valid.

Note that the phrase “or not” is not needed after the word “whether”: They’re trying to decide whether to go to the store.
